Apache Fishing Pier

Description

Spent about a week down at Apache Pier in Myrtle Beach, SC, and did some sketches of some places/objects there.

This one has a story behind it, and I think I'm going to remember it for a while.

(By the way, this took me over an hour to do. >>)

I was standing on the pier on Saturday night at about seven or so trying to draw this with the breeze continuously in my face and threatening to mess me up or blow the papers away. You see, I was trying something new by attempting to draw realistically. A few people came up to me and looked at how the drawing was going so far, but one gentleman in particular came up and gave me comments about my picture.

I asked him what I could do better, because I wanted to recieve criticism, and the answer I recieved would change my outlook on art.

He told me that there is no "right" way to draw, only that I have fun doing it, and that I see something out of what I draw. Then, he "borrowed" one of the papers in my sketchbook and scribbled what seemed to be a really bad picture on it, which could barely be seen if you look closely at the "No Cast Nets" picture over to the left-hand side. He told me that if I saw something out of it, and I had fun doing it, then it was good.

I then told him that I had my own Tim Burton-esque style, and showed him the other pictures I had in my sketchbook, which included the ones I recently posted on here except the Thauxan Book pictures. He told me that was okay.

I told him I was a bit self-conscious about my pictures because I had been told I still need to improve on "anatomy". He told me I shouldn't care about that, as long as I enjoy what I was doing, and I was satisfied with my work.

I admit, good advice for someone who had been drinking a bit of beer, since I noticed the Budweiser can on the table next to him.

He told me he was a good artist back in his day, and he inspired some of his friends to go into an artwork major, (one of them becoming a good architect) so he knew what he was talking about.

I never got his name, but my grandmother got a picture of him, and he surely changed my perspective on art for a very long time.

So, as of now, I will not be trying to get better. Better as you see it, anyway.

I'll be growing down instead.
